Leah (Stafford) Fry

How many years have you been involved with GVC? and why have you stayed involved?

“I first walked the halls of GVC in 1981 as a scared first grader transplanted from the east coast. We had just moved to Iowa and I knew one person. Over the years GVC grew in my heart as more of an extended family. By God’s provision, my parents were able to send me all the way through until my graduation in 1993. After marrying my husband Ryan Fry in 1996, who I met at Summit University in PA, we moved back to IA and desired Christian education for our own children. It is crazy to think and a testament to many faithful servants some of the teachers that taught me are still teaching!  We have stayed very involved over the years. My husband has served on the school board for GVCS for many years. God has blessed us with six children and all have attended or are currently attending GVC. And even now our oldest daughter a GVC alum is Communications Director.

What are your favorite memories from your time here at GVC?

I went from that scared first grader who hid in the bathrooms to a girl who grew in her faith and found friends that I still share life with today. The growth over the years from fear to faith and was able to participate in student body leadership, athletic teams [yes 6on6 basketball was a thing] and my senior year landed unexpectedly as the lead in the musical, Fiddler on the Roof. During my musical prep God wove my heart with Sue Fisher, the director then and NOW — she wrote me a note I still have to this day. Her support continued beyond HS. She mentored me as a young girl and even met with me as a new mom for years in my home. We studied the Bible and prayed together as my littles [Mack Carmenatte + Gage Fry] ran around in pjs. You just do not find that kind of investment into your soul many places.

How have you seen the Lord work in your life through GVC?

“I had the privilege of seeing teachers faithfully follow Gods calling in their lives and demonstrate right in front of me how to walk the narrow road. Many left a path that was worth following. I often thought the wide road looked more fun but quickly realizing many times it left me empty. In my searching, pushing the boundaries and just straight orneriness. I remember specific teachers and even the principal at the time telling me they had prayed for me in staff prayer. That kind of consistent undeserved love caused my heart to believe maybe I was meant for more and maybe what my parents wanted me to know and understand was true. I ended up searching God’s Word and wanting to know the heart of God. But it was the patient, tender love, constant prayers and shepherding of my heart by many teachers and administrators over the years that undeniably showed me that Jesus is worth living for.”
